POLICE DEPARTMENT UNDER THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

The Police Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania is the central institution of the internal affairs system, the purpose of which is to organize and control the activities of the police system in order to ensure personal, public safety and public order.

The Lithuanian Police system consists of the Police Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, specialized police agencies, territorial police headquarters and police professional training institution.

The Police Department is the connecting and leading link of the Lithuanian police system and has 15 subordinate institutions (10 county police headquarters and 5 specialized police agencies) located throughout the territory of Lithuania.

Functions of the Police Department:

  • Ensures the fulfillment of police functions ascribed to its competence;

  • Controls and coordinates activities of subordinate police entities and gives them recommendations and instructions;

  • Develops and carries out common police activities as well personnel policy of subordinate police entities;

  • Ensures the implementation of state programs within the police entities;

  • Organizes the implementation of decisions of the Lithuanian Police Commissioner General and monitoring of their implementation.
